If you nodded along to even one of these, this guide was written for you.
Most relationship advice tells you to "communicate better." But you've probably already tried that — and you're still stuck. This guide takes a different approach, grounded in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
"You cannot control how another person thinks, feels, or behaves. You can control how you think, feel, and behave — and that is where change begins."
Practical, Not Theory
Real, repeatable actions — not vague advice.
CBT-Based Framework
Built on 16 years of clinical therapeutic work.
One Person Can Change It
You don't need your partner to start.
What You'll Get
Each action is specific, practical, and designed to be done this week. No fluff — just real steps that create real change.

Rebuild your personal foundation — energy, identity, and wellbeing.
Communication
Create emotional safety through listening, validation, and repair.
Trust
Rebuild reliability through consistent action and healthy boundaries.

A taste of what's inside:
Pick one hobby you've let drift and schedule 30 minutes for it this week
Before your next difficult conversation, ask: 'Am I listening to understand or respond?'
Make one small commitment this week and follow through completely
Offer one piece of affection today that expects nothing in return
Reframe negative thoughts: 'I'm having the thought that…' to create distance
After any conflict, check in within 24 hours — 'Are we okay?'
...plus 14 more practical actions across all four pillars.
Your Guide

Stephen Boylan is a relationship psychotherapist specialising in CBT, with over 16 years of experience helping individuals and couples create lasting change.
After losing his mum at 14, Stephen struggled with grief, depression, and unhealthy coping behaviours before turning his life around in 2005. He qualified as a counsellor and completed advanced CBT training at Chester and Cumbria Universities.
Over years of clinical work, he developed the Foundations of Relationships (FOR) model — a structured framework that has helped thousands of individuals and couples transform their relationships through practical, behaviour-based change.
This action guide distils that framework into 20 practical steps you can start taking today.

The counselling I received has been paramount in me moving forward and enjoying life and my relationships to the full. He gave me a much clearer outlook and the tools to manage difficult thoughts and emotions.
